Two hours north of Belfast the cliff runs out and forty thousand basalt columns step into the sea.

The Causeway, the shipyard, an hour in a black cab, and Westeros.
The four bookings a first week in Northern Ireland is built around. What each one costs, and what the people who took it say.

04The Westeros dayGame of Thrones and Giant’s Causeway Full-Day Tour from BelfastFilming country along the Antrim coast, finishing at the stones. One long day, one bus.
Almost every Northern Irish day out finishes on the north coast.
The stones sit two hours from Belfast and hardly anyone drives themselves, because the coast road is the point and you want to look at it. Three shapes that day comes in, what it costs to board each one, and how much of it goes on the road.
Belfast first. Then the road north, and Derry after that.
A shipyard city with two hills behind it, sixty miles of coast road, the columns at Bushmills, a beech avenue that turned into a film set, and a walled city on the Foyle. Six places to start, and the best day out in each.
The days out Northern Ireland fills first.

Belfast keeps its recent history on the gable walls of the Falls and the Shankill.
The murals, the peace line gates and the streets either side of them account for most guided hours in this city. The tours below are the ones travellers rate highest, driven and walked by guides from the neighbourhoods they cover. Prices are per person and most run about ninety minutes.
Winterfell was County Down. The Iron Islands were a harbour at Ballintoy.
Tollymore Forest, Castle Ward, the Dark Hedges and the black basalt at Ballintoy, most of them inside an hour of Belfast. When the weather closes in, the studio at Banbridge holds the sets, the costumes and the throne indoors.
Derry is a mile of wall with a different story on every bastion.
The walls went up in 1613 and have never been taken, which is where the other name comes from. The circuit is about a mile and takes an hour at a walking pace, with the Bogside laid out below the western stretch. Guides run it in both directions and where you start changes what you hear first.

Three things that only happen in Northern Ireland.
Cliffs and old towns exist all over these islands. A basalt pavement of forty thousand columns, the slipways that launched the most famous hull ever built, and an unbroken seventeenth-century wall do not.

The Giant’s Causeway
A lava flow cooled slowly enough to crack into columns, most of them six-sided, and the Atlantic has been taking the cliff apart ever since. Roughly forty thousand of them step down into the water below Bushmills. The visitor centre sits at the top of a steep hill and the shuttle down is a separate ticket; the walk back up into a headwind is the part nobody warns you about.

Titanic Belfast
The building stands on the slipways where Titanic and Olympic were built, and its four angled hulls rise to the height of the original bows. Nine galleries run from the linen mills through the drawing offices to the launch, and the ticket takes in SS Nomadic in the dock outside, the last White Star vessel still afloat. Morning slots are quieter, especially with a cruise ship in.

The Derry Walls
Built between 1613 and 1619 and never breached, which is where the city gets its second name. Seven gates, a mile of circuit and cannon still pointing out over the Bogside from the western stretch. The Guildhall and the museum sit just inside the gates, so the walls and the story below them fit into one morning.

It rains here roughly one day in three. Plan the indoor half first.
The coast is wide open and weather arrives off the Atlantic with very little notice. Everything below has a roof on it: the yard galleries, a working still house, a museum, a studio full of sets. Book one for the afternoon and let the morning decide itself.
Belfast is small enough to walk, and worth a cab for the west of it.

The centre, the Cathedral Quarter and the yard make an easy morning on foot. West of the motorway the distances stretch out and a driver earns the fare. These three carry more travellers than anything else in the city.

Four Northern Irish bookings that will not wait.
Most of this country can be arranged the night before over a pint. These four run on timed slots, studio sessions and a cliff rope bridge that answers to the wind, none of which care when your flight lands.
